Urban World

As is now well known, the COVID-19 pandemic substantially increased work from home in Canada. In 2021, 32% of Canadian employees aged 15 to 69 worked most of their hours from home, compared with 4% in 2016.

The last two years have had a lasting impact on the future of work and the way we work, especially when it comes to working from home.

One of the most asked questions Edmonton based Wallbeds-etc receives: “How do I turn my extra room into a home office but still function as a bedroom”.

This question was poised to Lyle Morley, President of Wallbeds-etc, by Maria Belcastro of Bella Interiors, St. Albert, for her client whose downtown Edmonton hi-rise condo has one of the best views in the city.

As Maria shares, “Your home should be a true reflection of who you are - it should tell your story”. For her client Bev, the room had to serve Bev’s busy lifestyle, balancing professional career, family needs, yet designed to reflect urban living.

As Bev attests, “I live in a lock-and-go world”. With much emphasis placed on her demanding occupation as a Medical Device Representative, it means irregular hours, interruption, and upmost attention to detail. Bev needed a space that functions as an office, a bedroom for visiting family, and a personal space for wellness; yet stayed true to a minimalist-urban lifestyle.

For this, Bev turned to Maria, CID and owner of Bella Interiors for her design expertise. She needed to make her spare room more functional. During the consultation, Maria quickly became aware that this spare room needed to be multi-functional.  Her client, who works from home needed an office as well as a spare bedroom. Currently, Bev’s desk is at the kitchen island, and her grandchildren sleep on the sectional.  This coupled with the condo’s insufficient storage, the spare room became a “catch all” and wasn’t being used to its full potential.

Maria then sought out chief designer and space solution expert Lyle Morley. Together, they collaborated and designed the ideal room. It’s anchored by a Wallbeds-etc. with Home Office. This sleek modern design features a fold-down desk, side towers, overhead accent LED lighting, and gold handles. Maria then worked her magic to bring the rest of the room to life.

“We were able to meet my client’s needs. The room is not only as beautiful as its view- its functional! The Wallbed unit houses a desk, a double bed, and storage. The spare bedroom is no longer a “catch all”;  but a hard working office and  a beautiful spare bedroom.  The desk tucks away neatly at the end of the day and the bed easily folds down for when family and friends stay the night”, said Maria.

All Bev’s expectations were met. First it provides a comfortable workspace when the bed was upright. When the queen bed is down, it becomes a welcoming bed for a great night sleep. With the panoramic windows the room becomes an ideal space for personal wellness and reflection.

Bev changes lives with the work she does. The space Bella Interiors and Wallbeds-etc created; allows Bev to make a difference, for Doctors and their patients, her family, and those that are privileged to take in the view.
